Depending on the amount of space you have, you can plant a variety of plants. Real crowd pleasers are colourful flowers, fragrant plants like sweet peas, mint, and lavender, and vegetables. Picky eaters might even be more likely to eat their vegetables if they’ve grown them themselves and have seen where they come from.
To keep your child motivated, it’s a good idea to choose some plants that grow quickly so your child can see the fruits of their labour straightaway. Sunflowers are a must. You only need to plant one or two as they take up a lot of room. They will sprout within a week and be about two feet tall in a month. In late summer, you can collect their seeds to roast for a delicious snack.
Radishes produce quick results. They germinate in as little as 3 days and are ready to eat in 20 to 30 days. Lettuce also is quick and reliable, germinating in about 7 days and taking between 30 to 50 days to grow depending on the variety. Other good options are snow peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes.
