Found in southwestern Malaysia on the confluence of the Lang and Gombak rivers, Kuala Lumpur is the federal capital and the most populous city in the country with a population of 5.7 million in the metro area. The city’s history is young, dating back only to the 1850s. Today, it is the fastest growing area in the country. Popular destinations for tourists include the Mardeka Square, the House of Parliament, Petaling Street, the National Palace, the Kuala Lumpur Tower, and the Batu Caves. Kuala Lumpur has a tropical rainforest climate that is warm and sunny and has abundant rainfall. The average high temperature is around 32°C year-round with lows near 23°C. Annual average precipitation is 2,427mm with a large amount of rain falling during the northeast monsoon season from October to March. June and July are the driest months with about 125mm of rainfall each month. Flooding can occur in the city when there is a heavy downpour. Dust particles from forest fires may also cause a haze over the capital.
