Bucharest, also known as ‘Little Paris’ because of its tree-lined boulevards and architecture, is the capital of Romania and is situated in the southeast of the country. The city was remodeled in the 1930’s and there is even an ‘Arc de Triomph’, designed by Petre Antonescu. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants with outside seating dotted all over the city. The city is over 500 years old, so there is plenty of history to discover in this beautiful city. Admire Bucharest’s beautiful architecture by taking a stroll down one of the city’s most beautiful boulevards, Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue). The avenue was initially paved with oak beams when it was built in 1692 to connect the Old Princely Court to Mogosoaia Palace. However, in 1878, after the Romanian War of Independence the boulevard became known as Calea Victoriei. Since then, it has developed into one of the city’s most fashionable streets, and is lined with beautiful buildings, such as the National History Museum, the Military Club and Cantacuzino Palace, amongst many others. Bucharest has a very vibrant artistic scene and the National Opera and Ballet is worth visiting for its performances as well as its beautiful interior which is lavishly decorated. Opera and ballet performances are held all year round except in July and August and the world famous Romanian Opera performs in Romanian as well as in Italian and German. Why not take a day trip to Peles Castle located 80 miles from the city in Sinaia? This castle is a wonderful example of German new-Renaissance architecture and until 1947, it was used as the summer residence of the royal family. Admire the beautiful works of art, German stained glass windows and the crystal chandeliers. Also, nearby is the Sinaia Monastery which is also worth seeing if you have time. This served as the residence of the royal family before the castle was built.
Travel review
I travelled to Bucharest with my boyfriend last year for 5 days as we had both heard lovely things from friends who had already visited, and also because we love the opera, and wanted to catch a performance at the National Opera and Ballet. We went to see Carmen at the Opera and it was a great experience! I was surprised to see so many families at the opera with many young children- it was nice to see that it’s a family outing. Although the opera house is small, it’s an amazing building and made the experience very intimate. The only disadvantage was the food stands inside- the choice of food was very limited. We had read many great reviews about the Sky Bar, so decided to go and have a drink there. It’s a bar located on a roof top and offers great views of the city. The atmosphere is relaxing and the drinks were great, plus the staff were really friendly. This bar should be on everyone’s to-do list in Bucharest!We had a lovely time just strolling along the streets of the city admiring the beautiful architecture. It’s a great place to go for a romantic weekend or even with friends as the nightlife is lively- there are heaps of bars and restaurants to choose from. We would definitely like to go back again in the near future.

Bucharest’s climate
Found on the banks of the Dambovita River in the southeast of Romania, Bucharest is the capital and largest city in the country with a population of over 1.8 million. The most prosperous Romanian city, it is a major cultural, industrial, and financial centre. Popular landmarks are the Palace of the Parliament, the Arcul de Triumf (Triumphal Arch), the National Museum of Art, and the Cretulescu Palace. Bucharest has a transitional climate with both continental and subtropical influences. The average high temperature in summer is 29°C, and the city experiences occasional heavy summer storms. In winter, the average high temperature is 2°C with lows near -5°C though temperatures may reach -20°C. Winters tend to be very windy. Average annual precipitation is 595mm. Snowfall occurs during winter with about 56cm of snow every year.
