Barcelona, situated on the north east coast of Spain, is the capital city of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain after Madrid. The city, with a population of around 1,620,000, has a rich cultural heritage and is a very popular tourist destination. It is particularly well known for the architectural works of Antoni Gaudi and Lluís Domènech i Montaner which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is also known for having hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics and other major sporting tournaments and events. It is the fourth economically powerful city in the European Union and one of the world’s leading economic centres. Barcelona benefits from a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and dry, warm summers. The average annual temperature is 20°C in the day and 11°C at night. In summer temperatures vary between 25°C and 31°C. In winter the average temperature is around 14°C.
