Situated on the River Douglas in Greater Manchester in the North West of England, Wigan is a town with a population of 81,203. In the past, the town was a major mill town and coal mining district. Today, Wigan is home to the largest food manufacturing facility in Europe belonging to H. J. Heinz. Some attractions in the town include Mab’s Cross, the war memorial, and Mesnes Park. Wigan has a maritime climate with mild winters and cool summers. The average high temperatures in summer are around 19°C but temperatures can sometimes reach much higher. In winter, they are about 6°C with lows near 1°C. Rainfall occurs throughout the year.
