Found on the English Channel in Kent in the South East of England, Folkestone is a port town with a population of 45,273. At the southern edge of the North Downs, the town has been battered by storms along its coast throughout its history. Once a resort town, it has suffered from a decline during recent years. The major landmarks are the harbour and the Leas cliffs above the beach where a Martello Tower stands. It is also an important link for the Channel Tunnel. Folkestone has a climate characterised by cool summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in summer is 20°C with night time temperatures near 14°C. The average high in winter is about 7°C with lows near 3°C. Rainfall occurs throughout the year with an average of 12 to 15 days of rain each month. The sunniest months are June and July.
