The “Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Undivided Trinity” stands in the north of the city on the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter in 679. Today, the Cathedral houses the tomb of King Edward II. The Cathedral shop, located in a narrow lane leading to the cathedral is also worth a visit. The cathedral is stunning, even though Gloucester city centre itself looks a bit rundown.Gloucester Folk Museum is another hot spot of the city. There will be traditional Christmas markets with entertainers such as carol singers throughout December. Both the 500 year old building and gardens come back to life with handcrafted natural decorations, snowdrifts, twinkling lights. A Christmas Food Fayre, and candle lit tours of the museum are just some of the available highlights this Christmas.Gloucester is also celebrating the end of the year by transforming its Kings Square into a family “Winter Wonderland”. The free attraction is open until January 3rd, and features a fantastic “Santa’s Magical Post Office”. Visiting children watch their Christmas letters disappearing off to the North Pole. On the menu: the “Spiegeltent”, an ornate touring ballroom which serves as a dance floor and a bar, falling snow, seasonal market huts, street performers, children’s activities and festive food and drink, and loads more.When in Gloucester, the historic docks may also be worth a look.
