The climate in Calgary

Located in the province of Alberta, Canada, Calgary is the province’s largest city with a population of over 1 million and a metropolitan population of 1.2 million. The petroleum and oil industries are the main economic activities. The city’s oil boom occurred in 1947 when they discovered a large reserve of oil. The city is home to a large amount of attractions and landmarks, such as the Core Shopping Centre, the Calgary Zoo or the Telus World of Science. It is also a well known destination for winter sports due to its proximity to the Rocky Mountains. The city enjoys short, hot summers but experiences long and cold winters. In winter, the average daytime temperature is -3°C, but dry Chinook winds sometimes blow into the city, raising the temperatures. The average maximum temperature in summer is 24°C. Summer evenings can be quite cold due to the city’s high altitude. Calagry is listed as one of the sunniest cities in Canada.
